The pilot for the audio guides was during the ‘FX2: The Flight Experience’ exhibition at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, on World Sight Day, which was on the 13th October. The audio guides were used by 19 invited guests with visual impairment ranging from poor vision to totally blind. The content for the tour has been written for Visually Impaired visitors and is still in draft form.
Ulster Folk and Transport Museum asked for feedback and any suggested improvements. Much helpful information was received and the overall response was very favourable with many guests, and staff, impressed with the guides.
Ulster Folk and Transport Museum had tested various guides with visually impaired focus groups, and chose ATS Heritage's, Orpheo audio guide. Peter Carson, at the Museum said,
"We choose the Orpheo guides due to the good ergonomics of the guide, blind users could locate the controls, such as volume or pause with no difficulty. There is also a compact version available without a keypad. This is ideal for Visually Impaired users as both types of handset can start each track automatically when the visitor reaches the correct point in the gallery. The visitor does not need to press any buttons to hear the tracks. We purchased guides with and without keypads to allow for a more in depth pilot project".
ATS Heritage inspected the gallery and assisted with trigger placement and also provided assistance with the construction of the script. The installation was required at short notice to be ready for World Sight day and ATS Heritage worked hard to ensure the system was ready.
